This research project develops models, techniques, and architectures
for the adaptive processing of real-time remotely sensed, streaming
geospatial satellite image data. It employs a generic stream format,
called ~GeoStreams, for remotely sensed, geospatial image data, based
on the widely used image data formats to process continuous queries in
an adaptive fashion and to deliver tailored geospatial image data and
data products to consumers.

The ~GeoStreams query model and query processing framework extends
current models and techniques for processing continuous queries over
data streams to handle complex query frameworks on spatio-temporal
data.

Research activities focus on query processing techniques to optimize
multi-query processing of spatial and sensor band selections. Further
operators on ~GeoStreams include sensor band algebra, pixel
neighborhood processing, spatial filtering, spatio-temporal
aggregation, and spatial transformations (e.g., map projections).
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's
[[(NOAA)|http://www.noaa.gov]] Geostationary Operational Environmental
Satellite [[(GOES)|http://goespoes.gsfc.nasa.gov/goes/index.html]]
data, directly accessible in this project, serve as a primary testbed
for the research. A major testbed application is in support of water
balance applications. The goal is to calculate spatially distributed
daily reference
[[evapotranspiration|http://wwwcimis.water.ca.gov/cimis/infoEtoOverview.jsp]]
maps for the State of California at high spatial resolution (1 km2-16
km2), and in real-time. The methodology use GOES West data, properly
combined with weather station data, and ancillary spatial data such as
digital elevation maps.

!!Data and Query Model

We have developed a conceptual framework to represent different forms
of remotely-sensed imagery (RSI), with a particluar focus on raster
image data and metadata associated with raster images (spectral bands,
spatial and temporal resolution, spatial reference system). The query
model supports a variety of operations on RSI, including spatial,
value, and temporal filters, spatial transforms (e.g., map
re-projections), zooming, and spatio-temporal aggregates


!!Storage Management

To provide adaptive and efficient query processing in the presence on
multiple-user continuous queries, we study different buffer management
strategies, buffer replacement policies, and data compression
techniques. These are tailored to streaming remotely-sensed data. We
currently manage most of the RSI in two ways: (1) main memory for
real-time query processing, and (2) secondary storage (GRASS database)
to support history queries and archival functionality.

!!Query Processing and Optimization

We have developed a multi-query processing framework that supports the
efficient sharing of operators and streaming RSI. In particular, we
have developed a data structure called Dynamic Cascade Tree that
supports the efficient filtering and streaming of streaming data to
subsequent, typically more expensive, operators such as map
projections, binary image operators or spatio-temporal aggregates.

!!Web-based Architectures

Streaming geospatial image data should be queried and viewed through a
Web-based interface. This is realized using the !GeoStreams Viewer,
which allows to select spectral bands, regions of interest, and
pre-defined data products.

!!Spatio-temporal Aggregation

Different types of spatio-temporal aggregations need to be performed
on the streaming data. For this, it is essential to develop space and
query efficient index structures.

!!Distributed Architectures

In the case of multiple streams from several satellites, a single
processor machine will not be able to process all the queries over
these streams. Thus, it is essential to extend the query model
concepts and techniques developed for a "centralized" environment to a
distributed environment where query operators are scheduled on
different nodes, depending on the workload of the system.

!!Scientific Workflows

Many of the query processing scenarios on streaming data can be viewed
as complex image processing pipelines, which can equally be designed
and realized using a scientific workflow approach. This can be
beneficial in particular for some standard data products.
